MAN OF LA MANCHA (US tour, New York, NY, Jun-1972)
Richard Kiley (Cervantes/Don Quixote), Joan Diener (Aldonza/Dulcinea),
Edmond Verrato (Sancho Panza u/s), Lee Bergere (Dr. Carrasco), Dianne Barton (Antonia),
Laura Kenyon (Fermina), Jack Dabdoub (The Innkeeper), Eleanore Knapp (The Housekeeper),
Robert Rounseville (The Padre), Renato Cibelli (Captain of the Inquisition), John Aristides (Juan),
Rita Metzger (Maria), Ted Forlow (The Barber/The Horse u/s), Shev Rodgers (The Horse/Pedro),
Fernando Grahal (Tenorio/Dancing Horse), Hector Mercado (Dancing Horse/Jose), Bill Stanton (Paco),
Men of The Inquisition/Guards: Robert Cromwell, Jeff Killion, David Wasson
A pro-shot from the Lincoln Center filmed by the producers.
A comment by waynewar: "After concluding a successful road tour, Richard Kiley brought the company of Man of La Mancha into New York City, opening at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre at Lincoln Center on 22-Jun-1972, and running until 21-Oct-1972. This video was shot of that engagement, using a single tripod mounted camera and sound board sound. While the exact date of the filming is not known, I believe it to be from 22-Jun-1972. It is known that Irving Jacobson was out sick for the first two performances, and that his understudy, Edmond Verrato, went on for him on June 22nd and 23rd. It makes sense to me that the first performance of the run would be the one that was filmed by the producers."

MARY POPPINS (Broadway, 31-Oct-2006)
Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Gavin Lee (Bert),
Daniel Jenkins (George Banks), Rebecca Luker (Winifred Banks),
Jane Carr (Mrs. Brill), Ruth Gottschall (Miss Andrew),
Katherine Leigh Doherty (Jane Banks), Alexander Scheitingerm (Michael Banks first part of act one),
Matthew Gumley (Michael Banks second part of act one and all of act two),
Cass Morgan, Mark Price, Michael McCarty
The camera is quite shaky and the close-ups are not really sharp. On the other hand, a lot of full-stage shots let you appreciate the choreography and designs. As a side note, you can hear the master breathing heavily throughout the show (it's not too annoying though). B+
The show was stopped for 10 minutes due to technical difficulties (so there's an announcement mid first act). Also, there's a five minute "paused screen" between the acts — this was obviously done by the master on purpose, and the action continues afterwards.

MOULIN ROUGE (Boston, MA, 19-Aug-2018) 2 DVD
Aaron Tveit (Christian), Karen Olivo (Satine), Danny Burstein (Harold Zidler), Tam Mutu (Duke),
Sahr Ngaujah (Toulouse), Ricky Rojas (Santiago), Robyn Hunter (Nini)
SunsetBlvd79's master. HD capture of the final pre-Broadway performance. A drinking woman's head blocks most of the left side and she does not sit still. Plus there's some spotlight washout, and the expanded stage makes it harder to film the action. This is far from perfect, but you can still get an idea of what the show looks like. B

Alice Ripley (Diana, last), Brian d'Arcy James (Dan, last), Kyle Dean Massey (Gabe),
Jennifer Damiano (Natalie, last), Adam Chanler-Berat (Henry), Louis Hobson (Dr. Fine/Dr. Madden)
Missing the first minute or so of Act 1. The quality is fantastic with really good close-ups and stunning performances from the cast. Probably the best performance I have seen from Alice Ripley, and there's a touching moment near the end where Jennifer and Adam cry all the way through "Hey #3", with Adam especially sounding like a strangled cat!
As I say the quality of the actual show is brilliant, but for some reason the speeches after the show are mostly audio and what little video there is is not good. No small files.

Pro-shot. Amazingly good quality for a video of this age, with only minimal generational loss. This video was probably made for a cast member, or maybe for media use at it was filmed from a tripod, with sound patched in directly from the sound board. Occasionally there is some noise and the sound volume drops however for the most of the video the voices sound incredibly clear with the music rather playing in the background; B

OLIVER! (London, Sep-2010)
Russ Abbot (Fagin), Kerry Ellis (Nancy), Steven Hartley (Sikes), Edward Cooke (Oliver), Ben Wilson (Dodger)
Master's notes: The first release of this production in a long while, this is a video of the full show asides from a quick cut during the first verse of "Consider Yourself". It is filmed from back stalls with virtually no blackouts and minimal head obstruction which is limited to the very bottom of the screen in wide shots. The action is followed very well, using various types of shots as necessary. One slight drawback to the video is that it is relatively dark due to the darkness of the lighting in the show itself; nevertheless, it is still an extremely well-filmed capture of the show. The show itself is very entertaining. It is absolutely fascinating visually since this production goes all out in depicting both the scenes of London street life and Fagin's underground lair. The kids are all uniformly adorable and the grown-up cast is just as strong. Russ Abbot is amazing as Fagin and, while I'm not much of a Kerry fan otherwise, I was very pleasantly surprised by her Nancy.

New leads including Arthur Darvill from Doctor Who! The whole cast was amazing, and the show was fantastic. Audio only till the beginning of Leave (when the house-lights dim), and a small blackout after Falling Slowly, but after that it is an unobstructed, steady shot and very well filmed.

PARADE (Reunion concert, Avery Fisher Hall, New York, 16-Feb-2015) 2 DVD
Jeremy Jordan (Leo Frank), Laura Benanti (Lucille Frank), Joshua Henry (Jim Conley),
John Ellison Conlee (Hugh Dorsey), Davis Gaines (Old soldier/Judge Roan), Alan Campbell (Governor Slaton),
Rachel De Benedet (Sally Slaton), Ramin Karimloo (Tom Watson), Andy Mientus (Britt Craig),
Katie Rose Clarke (Mrs. Phagan), Emerson Steele (Mary Phagan), Charlie Franklin (Young soldier/Frankie Epps),
Alvin Crawford (Newt Lee/Riley), Andrea Jones-Sojola (Minnie McKnight/Angela/Nina Formby), Allie Trimm (Essie),
Caitlin Houlahan (Iola Stover), Ephie Aardema (Monteen), John Jellison (Luther Rosser/Mr. Peavy),
Eric Anderson (Officer Starnes/Middle aged man from Valdosta/Chain gang guard),
Eric Leviton (Policeman/Prison guard/Jury foreman)
A fantastic capture of this one-night-only concert at Avery Fisher Hall. Jeremy and Laura give incredible performances, as does Joshua Henry and too many others to name. Jason Robert Brown gives a speech after the curtain call. Truly an epic night of theatre. This is a very near perfect video with no obstruction and only slight washout in wide shots. There are two quick dropouts in the first few minutes, but the concert is otherwise fully captured. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, Jason’s speech, and playbill scans. A+

PRODUCERS, THE (Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA, 28-Jul-2012) 2 DVD
Richard Kind, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Gary Beach, Roger Bart, Dane Cook, Rebecca Romijn
Excellent capture of that year's Hollywood Bowl production. Three songs were cut from the show: "Never Say Good Luck on Opening Night", "Where Did We Go Right?", and "Betrayed"; stage is filmed directly, not the screens, so the action is followed well with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The first minute of the show is missing, and the next few minutes are a bit shaky with scattered blackouts, but after "The King of Broadway" it settles and the majority of the show is captured nicely, filmed in 16:9, and the sound excellent; includes curtain call. This production staged by Neil Patrick Harris (who previously played Mark himself) is a pretty weak one. There's a lot of stars in the cast but the whole thing looks terribly underrehearsed. The video is quite blurry but you can still notice David Burtka (he has a bright blue fringe) in the ensemble.

Matthew James Thomas (alt. Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Kristen Martin (Mary Jane Watson u/s),

Some blackouts, but otherwise it's super clear quality and sound.
There's an issue with the DVD authoring: when played as a whole, the disc won't play after VTS_01_2.VOB. However, the video is complete and works great if each VOB section (i.e. VTS_01, VTS_02, VTS_03, and VTS_04 for the second disc) is played on its own.

SUNSET BOULEVARD (Sydmonton workshop, 31-Aug-1991)
Ria Jones (Norma Desmond), Michael Ball (Joe Gillis),
Kevin Colson (Max von Mayerling), Frances Ruffelle (Betty Schaefer)
About 37 minutes long, it is an earliest known public performance of the show, and very different from the final version. Produced at the Sydmonton Festival on the grounds of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Hampshire country house. Multi-camera proshot with heavy generational loss: picture rolls and the sound wavers, but is understandable and watchable. Performed when about half written, this is a very interesting piece of theatrical history.

Full-stage, filmed through the house camera, no zooms. Audio is from the soundboard. Mostly a little dark due to the production specifics, however the faces appear washed out when under the tight lights. Epiphany and A Little Priest are replaced by a multicamera pro-shot.
I'm not a particular fan of both leading performances but this is still interesting as a part of history of this great show. A-

Produced in English at the world-famous Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. A single-cam tripod shot that suffers a bit from a spotlight washout. The close-ups are nice but sometimes when the action is at several locations simultaneously some important bits are happening off-screen. Singing is mostly fine, however the acting of some performers (including Rod Gilfry) "leaves you wanting more", quoting a lyric from "A Little Priest". Still, Caroline O'Connor is absolutely stunning, and Stephen Sondheim himself called her the best Mrs. Lovett he has ever seen. A-

A good HD capture with all things considered. This was a very small Theater and almost staged Theatre-in-the-round. Part of the railing lines the bottom of the screen for most scenes, which also can block actors far downstage left. All that considered, still a very enjoyable rare capture and performances.

UNAUTHORIZED AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SAMANTHA BROWN, THE (Los Angeles, CA, 03-May-2009)
Patti Murin (Sam), Jenni Barber (Kelly), Nick Blaemire (Adam),
Lisa Brescia (Mom), Stephen Bogardus (Dad)
Final performance: a good mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups shots but a little more obstruction here, but it mostly just blocks the actors' feet/legs sometimes; some washout in the wides, and the dialogue is pretty quiet sometimes, but it's all still understandable. Many changes had been made since the previous video, most notably in The Girl Who Drove Away, Drive, and Sam's monologue after I Wouldn't Change Anything. No small files; A.

Jeremy Jordan, Solea Pfeiffer, Karen Olivo, Matthew James Thomas, George Akram,
Drew Foster, Kevin Chamberlin, Kyle Selig, Anthony Chatmon II, Mike Schwitter,
Jennifer Sanchez, Brit West, Erica Dorfler, Jeff Smith, Jose Moreno Brooks, Julia Bullock
A concert performance (i.e. no props or dances) with a solid cast. Jeremy Jordan may be a little too intense to play Tony but his vocals are expectedly stunning. As it often happens with Hollywood Bowl bootlegs, the close-ups are a bit blurry due to large distance to the stage. Still, it's quite watchable and the sound is great. A-

WHICH WITCH (London, 19-Dec-1992)
Benedicte Adrian (Maria Vittoria), Graham Bickley (Bishop Daniel), Vivien Parry (Anna Regina),
Billy Hartman (Cardinal Gonzaga), Stig Rossen (Anton Fugger), Sara Weymouth (Giulia),
Leo Andrew (Pier Luigi), Gay Soper (Gertrude), Jahn Teigen (The Executioner)
Pro-shot of the final performance. Which Witch opened at the Piccadilly Theatre in London on October 22, 1992 and ran for 76 performances, after a critical savaging. It has been described as "the second worst West End musical of all time", a "bizarre musical", and "a dire rock opera". To quote the Reddit user justjmichael, "The leading lady actually got boo-ed off the stage at one point during the show. Can you imagine? There are moments of brilliance, and moments of absolute confusion. I can only imagine what it must have been like to be in the ensemble at the end of Act 1 dancing with a giant phallus attached to my crotch."
The video was officially released on VHS only but this seems to be a professional transfer to DVD made in 1997 so the quality is very good. No small files.
